What is the Coronavirus?

What is the Coronavirus and COVID-19

The novel COVID-19 or Coronavirus has left the world startled and unsure of a lot of aspects of everyday life. This virus is impacting jobs, homes, schooling and most detrimental – people’s lives. But what exactly is COVID-19?

Coronaviruses are a group of RNA viruses that affect the respiratory systems of mammals and birds. The latest discovery of the group is COVID-19. This is the virus that has swept the globe and left a trail of disruption in its path.

What does the Coronavirus do to humans?

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease that will leave most people experiencing mild to moderate respiratory illness and will recover without requiring any special treatment. However, those with underlying health problems are more likely to experience more severe side effects and may require hospital treatment. The worst affected may become unable to breathe and will become fatal.

What can I do to help?

As members of communities, we can slow down and prevent transmission. The best way to do this is to be aware of how the virus spreads. There is a lot of different information out there that teaches you different methods, but as seen around the globe, and in South Africa, the simplest way is to wash your hands and wear a face mask. Washing your hands regularly or using antibacterial alcohol-based sanitiser, removes bacteria from your hands before it reaches your face or mouth. The virus is spread through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when the person coughs or sneezes. Therefore, it is important to practice etiquette of sneezing into a bent elbow or wearing a face mask.

Is there a cure for COVID-19?

Different medical centres in various countries are working to create a vaccine for COVID-19, yet there currently isn’t any treatment available. This emphasises the importance of practising good etiquette and washing hands and covering your face.
